Green hydrogen capacity in China crosses one-million tons mark

April 30, 2026 |

In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that China’s renewable energy hydrogen production capacity built or under construction has surpassed 1 million tons per year as of March 2026, with operational capacity more than doubling since the end of 2024, according to official figures released today by the National Energy Administration.

The Northeast and North China regions are driving most of the growth, with Jilin and Inner Mongolia alone accounting for over 170,000 tons per year of cumulative installed capacity — and individual projects of 50,000 tons or more now breaking ground.

According to the National Hydrogen Energy Information Platform, China’s total renewable energy hydrogen production capacity built or currently under construction hit more than 1 million tons per year by the end of March 2026. Of that, over 250,000 tons per year is already completed and operational — a figure that has more than doubled compared to the end of 2024. A further 900,000-plus tons per year is under active construction, according to the report.
