German researchers dig into enzymes for breaking down plastics completely

October 14, 2026 |

In Germany, researchers from the University of Greifswald are therefore investigating how biochemical procedures may help to break plastics down into their individual chemical building blocks and make them available for a new product cycle. In two new publications in the scientific journals Nature Chemical Biology and Nature, two teams around Greifswald biochemist Prof. Dr. Uwe T. Bornscheuer have now shown the potential enzymes hold for recycling plastics that were previously difficult to recycle and which factors are decisive for reliably determining whether biological degradation processes are actually effective.
