Flemish team converts lignin to biobased aromatics

March 30, 2026 |

In Belgium, researchers at The Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) have converted lignin into biobased aromatic molecules that can be used in the production of plastics and other useful end products. Currently, lignin is often burned as a waste product from paper production. However, scientist at VITO say lignin contains “a wealth” of chemical structures, including ones that resemble aromatic structures.

In a pilot plant in Mol, lignin was “cracked” into biobased aromatics over a 72-hour period.  The aromatics produced can be used in the production of coatings, composite materials, adhesives and resins. The team hopes to achieve industrial production within 2-3 years.
