Evonik starts pilot production of AEM electrolysis membranes

June 18, 2026 |

In Bulgaria, Renewables Now reported that German speciality chemicals company Evonik Industries has started production of a “high-performance” membrane for AEM (Anion Exchange Membrane) electrolysis at a pilot plant in Marl, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The new facility now makes the polymer membrane at a commercial scale, the company said today. It has the capacity to produce membranes for up to 2.5 GW of electrolysis capacity a year, which is about 25% Germany’s total planned electrolysis capacity for 2030.

“Our membrane delivers high performance while reducing investment costs, enabling the innovative AEM technology to achieve a breakthrough in hydrogen production,” said Christian Daeschlein, Head of the New Growth Area AEM in Evonik’s Innovation Factory.

Evonik’s DURAION membranes are already being used by early manufacturers of AEM electrolyzers in pilot production and demonstration plants.
