EU project selects Genevos for marine fuel cell demonstration

February 19, 2026 |

In France, Genevos said on February 16 that it has joined the €15 million European Union funded HELENUS project to build and test a 100 kilowatt solid oxide fuel cell module for commercial and cruise ships, with plans to demonstrate the system aboard a research vessel operated by the German Aerospace Centre.

The Horizon Europe backed consortium brings together shipbuilders, engine makers, cruise operators, and classification societies to assess whether solid oxide fuel cells can provide onboard power for large ocean going vessels. Genevos will develop its XPM-100 module as a scalable unit for higher power applications and design it to run on fuels such as liquefied natural gas or bio-methane.

The project moves the company’s technology from laboratory development toward real world maritime testing. Cruise shipping has been identified as an early target market if the demonstration proves viable.
