EU greenlights Poland’s hydrogen subsidies

April 30, 2026 |

In the UK, Gas World reported that Poland’s plans to allocate over $585 million in subsidies for 343MW of green and low-carbon hydrogen production under the country’s fourth Covid recovery payment have been approved by the EU.

The European Commission signed off the $8.4 million package, which will also include funding to deploy over 1,000 electric or hydrogen buses.

The funding will be issued to companies to build electrolyzer installations at least 20MW in capacity, according to the report.

Polish development bank BGK signed funding agreements under the program last October, with state-owned oil and gas firm Orlen winning big.

Companies will be able to use funds for projects either using exclusively renewable energy under the EU’s renewable fuels of non-biological origin rules, or low-emissions sources in line with the low-carbon fuels rules, which were approved last year, the report added.

The projects lined up for the funds were selected by the Polish government last year.
