Emirates Biotech, UAEU launch pilot to turn waste into biogas
In the United Arab Emirates, Middle East Utilities reported that Emirates Biotech and United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) have launched a research project to turn food waste and compostable packaging into renewable biogas and nutrient-rich compost.
The partners plan to build an integrated pilot plant near UAEU’s Al Ain campus capable of processing up to 40kg of organic waste a day. The facility will combine anaerobic digestion, which produces biogas, with composting of the material left after digestion. Installation and commissioning are expected to be completed by August 2027, according to the report.
Over the two-year research program, running from August 2026 to August 2028, the team will assess the process’s technical performance and its environmental and economic potential. It will also develop operating guidance to inform any future scale-up. A separate laboratory assessment will explore whether the biogas could be converted into renewable hydrogen, it added.
