Elea & Lili raises $2.9 million for cellulose SAP alternative

March 23, 2026 |

In Finland, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland spinout Elea & Lili has raised €2.5 million (US$2.9 million) to commercialize its cellulose-based alternative for fossil-based superabsorbent polymers.

Dubbed Cellulose Super Absorbent, the microplastic-free, biodegradable material is first being applied to disposable diapers and agriculture, end markets that generate large amounts of plastics waste and microplastic pollution. The World Economic Forum estimates that disposable diapers alone generate nearly 40 million tons of waste annually.

The funding was led by Lifeline Ventures and will accelerate pilot production, industrial partnerships, regulatory validation, and first commercial launches in the U.S. and Europe.  The round also included Ikorni Invest Oy Ab and Baltiska Handels Sverige AB.
