Differential Bio, FermBase partner to optimize fermentation media
The partnership combines Differential Bio’s robotic laboratory automation and machine learning capabilities with FermBase’s expertise in raw materials, product development and supply chains. The companies aim to help industrial biotechnology businesses develop fermentation processes faster, improve efficiency and reduce the challenges of scaling production.
Differential Bio uses automated experiments to generate data that machine learning models analyze to identify promising process conditions and ingredient combinations, including those not previously tested. FermBase contributes raw material expertise during development and supports the transition to industrial production through scalable supply chains.
The companies’ first joint project was Y-Base Blend, a standardized trace-element blend for yeast fermentation launched by FermBase in September. During development, the partners narrowed more than 50,000 potential trace-element combinations to 3,300 experiments conducted using different yeast strains on Differential Bio’s automated laboratory platform. Machine learning then helped identify the final formulation.
The partners said the collaboration will extend beyond Y-Base Blend, with plans to develop additional technology-based solutions for the fermentation industry.
