Designer creates horticulture pots out of organic waste

February 16, 2026 |

In Portugal, designer Adonis Evangelista has unveiled Biodegradable Pots, a material‑research initiative demonstrating how organic waste can be transformed into renewable planting containers to reduce the horticulture industry’s dependence on single use plastics.

Evangelista sourced organic waste from three major streams: natural fibers and plant residues from floriculture operations, eggshells and other food scraps from restaurants, and sawdust from local carpentry workshops. From there, different fabrication methods were evaluated for efficacy and efficiency.

Initial results show that these waste‑derived composites can perform comparably to conventional plastic pots while offering a fully renewable end‑of‑life pathway. Once planted directly into soil, the containers break down naturally.
