CovationBio completes Qidong biobased PTMEG plant

April 20, 2026 |

In China, biomaterials firm Covation Biomaterials has completed construction of its first commercial plant for bioTHF and biobased polytetramethylene ether glycol.

Located in Qidong, Jiangsu Province, China, the plant uses a technology developed by CovationBio. This first phase brings 50,000 metric tons of annual bioPTMEG production online, with commercial production expected in the second half of the year. Two more phases are anticipated that will bring total production to 500,000 metric tons online for a total of RMB 10 billion ($1.5 billion), although a timeline for expansion was not provided.

The bioPTMEG serves as a drop-in replacement to fossil-based PTMEG, helping customers reduce their reliance on non-renewable materials while maintaining the  performance of downstream material applications such as spandex, polyurethanes, and thermoplastic elastomers, CovationBio said.
