ColorFun project advances fungal dyes
In the Netherlands, a collaborative project to produce blue and orange dyes through fungal fermentation is scaling up production to support further customer testing. Coordinated by MNEXT, an R&D center focused on the materials and energy transition, ColorFun will first scale up production of the blue dye, followed by the orange dye at a later date.
Initial testing by NPSP, which is evaluating the dyes for use in construction façade panels, identified challenges with color intensity, consistency and purification. Scaling up will provide more material for further research and application testing, Jasper Meijer, senior researcher and ColorFun project leader at MNEXT, told MycoStories.
