Colombia courts white hydrogen investment

May 17, 2026 |

In Chile, BNamericas reported that Colombia has outlined plans for a white hydrogen licensing framework as part of the government’s push to accelerate investment in energy transition projects.

The report noted that the mines and energy ministry published draft rules that would allow companies to compete for exploration and production rights for naturally occurring hydrogen deposits.

The proposal lays out how companies could bid for areas, nominate prospective acreage and secure permits to evaluate, explore and eventually produce white hydrogen, it added.

“The country is moving toward building a clear, transparent and technical regulatory framework to develop the potential of white hydrogen, while guaranteeing operational safety, environmental responsibility, social participation and opportunities for regions,” mines and energy minister Edwin Palma said.

The framework would allow the ministry to award areas through competitive evaluation of technical offers, while also letting companies nominate blocks outside government-defined zones. Nominated areas could cover as much as 800 square kilometers.
