CMA CGM bunkers bioethanol in Brazil
In Brazil, the 13,000-TEU CMA CGM Iron took on sugarcane-based bioethanol at the Port of Santos on July 12 in the country’s first such bunkering of a deep-sea containership. CMA CGM, Copersucar and Bunker One moved the fuel through dedicated storage and aboard by specialized barge.
Brazilian sugar and ethanol trader Copersucar supplied the fuel through a certified supply chain covered by the country’s RenovaBio program, which sets sustainability and zero-deforestation requirements. AGEO handled storage and Santos Brasil supported the transfer.
Delivered in 2025, the vessel is the first of 12 CMA CGM containerships equipped with an Everllence tri-fuel engine certified to run on bioethanol. CMA CGM expects to operate about 200 container ships capable of using lower-carbon fuels by 2031.
