ClassNK issues first certificate under Asia’s ICAO-approved SAF scheme
In New York, IBT reported that Japan’s Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, or ClassNK, said it had issued the first certificate under its sustainable aviation fuel certification scheme, ClassNK SCS, marking full-scale operations for what it said is Asia’s first International Civil Aviation Organization-approved SAF certification framework.
The certificate was issued by Nippon Kaiji Kentei QA Co., the certification body under the scheme, to lumber producer Mokkanomori Co. ClassNK said the issuance gives SAF-related businesses in Japan a domestic route to obtain certification under an ICAO-approved scheme, where they had previously been required mainly to work with overseas schemes, according to the report.
ClassNK SCS was approved by ICAO in October 2024 and began operations in August 2025, making it the third certification scheme approved globally and the first in Asia. Nippon Kaiji Kentei QA, established in 1993, carried out the first certification under the ClassNK SCS framework, the report added.
ClassNK plans to expand its network of certification bodies and lead the buildout of SAF certification infrastructure in Japan and the broader Asian region.
