China’s MOT puts green marine fuel certification to work
In China, the Ministry of Transport is expanding its Global Sustainable Transport Certification, or GSTC, system for green marine fuels, with applications across methanol and ammonia projects and new certification efforts in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
The China International Sustainable Transport Innovation and Knowledge Center, a research and standards body under the ministry, developed GSTC to assess fuel sustainability, greenhouse gas reductions, traceability and environmental and social impacts across the full life cycle. The system was used for the 2,824 ton green methanol bunkering of the Arctic Tern at Shanghai Port in July.
Projects using GSTC include the Shenergy led 100,000 ton Shanghai green methanol project, Towngas’s Inner Mongolia green methanol plant using biomass waste and scrap tires, and China Energy Construction’s Songyuan green hydrogen, ammonia and methanol complex.
