China’s grain production trends upward, FAS says

March 30, 2026 |

In China, World Grain reported that China’s corn production is forecast to rise to 305 million tons with consumption reaching 323 million tons in 2026-27 while imports are expected to remain flat at 8 million tons, according to a report from the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture.

The country’s overall grain outlook for the marketing year is characterized by an ongoing push to build domestic production, tightly manage imports and support food security through higher yields rather than major acreage expansion, the FAS said.

“China’s grain trade remains heavily influenced by tariff rate quotas (TRQ) for corn, wheat and rice, as well as by additional retaliatory tariffs on US products, although some retaliatory tariffs were reduced or suspended beginning in November 2025,” the FAS said.

Corn production in 2026-27 is seen benefiting from improved yields and expanded adoption of genetically engineered (GE) corn, rising 3.8 million tons from the 2025-26 harvest. China continues to discourage large import volumes while relying on domestic supply growth, reserve management and tight TRQ administration, the FAS noted.
