CATL to help CarbonScape scale wood-based graphite
In New Zealand, CarbonScape has partnered with CATL, the world’s largest battery maker, to accelerate scale up of its wood-based battery-grade graphite. The deal also includes an investment that gives CATL and co-investor Lochpine Capital a combined 20% stake in CarbonScape, along with seats on the company’s board.
Graphite is the single largest raw material by weight in a lithium-ion battery. CarbonScape converts forestry by-products like wood chips into battery-grade biographite, providing a regional, lower-carbon alternative to conventional synthetic graphite made from petroleum feedstocks. Under the terms of the collaboration, CarbonScape and CATL will validate CarbonScape’s technology at demonstration scale.
Oscar Luo, Executive President and Global Head of BD, Licensing & Venture Management at CATL, called CarbonScape’s graphite “a true breakthrough in material science.”
