Canadian funeral group becomes first to offer Loop’s mycelium coffins and urns
In Canada, Mount Pleasant Group’s Meadowvale Cemetery, Funeral and Cremation Centres have become the first in Canada to offer the Loop Living Cocoon and Loop EarthRise mushroom-based burial products. Developed by Dutch company Loop Biotech, Loop Living Cocoon and Loop EarthRise “represent a new era in sustainable end-of-life care,” according to a press statement. “They are designed to biodegrade within 45 days, enriching the soil and supporting biodiversity.”
The Loop Living Cocoon is a coffin grown from mycelium – the root network of mushrooms – and upcycled hemp fibers. Each cocoon is grown in just seven days and features a soft, moss-lined interior. The Loop EarthRise is a sustainable urn that can be buried in a natural or traditional cemetery or kept at home as a biodegradable ornament. The urn holds up to 4L of cremated remains. When buried, it also biodegrades within 45 days.
