C16 Biosciences palm oil substitute debuts in lip plumper

May 25, 2026 |

In California, beauty brand Tower 28 has debuted a lip jelly using Palmless Torula Oil, a fermentation-derived substitute for palm oil produced by C16 Biosciences.

Alternatives to palm oil are in high demand because of widespread deforestation linked to the ubiquitous product. Twofifths of the world’s vegetable oil supply comes from palm oil, and it shows up in roughly half of all supermarket products across every aisle. According to C16, torula oil is nearly chemically and functionally identical to palm oil.

Tower 28’s ShineOn Plumping Lip Jelly is the first time the product has been used in a color cosmetic. It is available in five shades, including clear Chill Heat and beige Warm Flow.

“Together with Tower 28, we’re bringing next-generation biotech ingredients into modern beauty formulations, combining high-performance shine and hydration with bio-designed innovation,” C16 said in a LinkedIn post, as reported by sustainability-focused publication, Green Queen.
