Avant winds down marine peptides unit to focus on lab-grown fish

February 16, 2026 |

In Hong Kong, lab-grown fish startup Avant is shuttering its marine peptides unit, Avant Proteins, to focus on gaining regulatory approval for its fish in Singapore. Founded in 2018, Avant began with cultivated fish but expanded into cell-based marine protein ingredients for skincare in 2021. Dubbed Zellulin, the platform could be used in moisturizers, creams and serums.

Investment in lab-grown meat sector has plummeted in recent years. According to Good Food Institute, such firms attracted $1.3 billion in 2021, but just $74 million in 2025.  Several pioneers in the sector have closed, such as Believer Meats in Israel and Meatable in the Netherlands, according to Green Queen.
