Prototype brings mycelium and other biobased materials to digital cameras
In Brooklyn, mushroom farmer Sree Krishna Pillarisetti has created a digital camera casing made from mycelium, hemp and bioplastic polyhydroxyalkanoate. Dubbed Soft-pixel, design publication Yanko Design describes the physical look of the camera as a “granola bar that takes pictures.” A see-through, impact-protecting shell covers a fibrous interior. The back has a square screen, four directional buttons and orange labels, including “Cheese!” for the shutter and a microSD slot for storage.
Soft-pixel was named the Best Eco-Design for 2026 by the European Product Design Award, but remains in the prototype stage for now.
