BASF exploring acquisition of Evonik

September 28, 2026 |

In Germany, BASF, the world’s largest chemical maker, has confirmed exploratory talks to take over Evonik, a specialty chemicals giant with extensive activities in biobased products.

“The course and outcome of these exploratory talks remain open at this stage,” BASF said in a press statement.

BASF reported €59.66 billion (US$68.23 billion) in sales in 2025. While the vast majority of its production is petroleum-based, it has a growing portfolio of biobased and biomass-balanced chemicals using renewable feedstocks such as vegetable oils, fats, biomethane and bionaphtha. Its offerings include biobased acrylates as well as products made through a certified mass-balance approach.

Renewable feedstocks account for about 10% of Evonik’s raw material base by weight. The company reported €14.1 billion in sales in 2025. Its renewable products include biosurfactants and methacrylate monomers.
