D-CRBN taps Worley to engineer renewable syngas demo plant

In Australian, engineering firm Worley has been selected to engineer D-CRBN’s renewable syngas demonstration plant in Belgium. The project is designed to demonstrate a lower-carbon pathway for producing feedstock used in the chemicals and fuels sectors.

The plant will produce syngas using D-CRBN’s plasma technology, which uses electricity to convert carbon dioxide and biomethane into renewable syngas. The syngas can then be used to produce lower-carbon fuels, plastics, and chemicals.

Worley will deliver the plant’s design, along with safety and cost studies needed to support construction.

“Moving from concept development to detailed engineering is an important milestone for D-CRBN. Worley’s experience in gas separation, multidisciplinary engineering and industrial project execution will help us translate our proprietary plasma technology into an integrated and safe demonstration unit. The project will provide the operational data and engineering foundation needed for our near-future commercial-scale deployment,” Gill Scheltjens, D-CRBN CEO, said in a press statement.

The modular demonstration plant is designed to support faster deployment and future expansion. It will produce 200 metric tons of renewable syngas per year and support a future commercial plant with an approximate annual capacity of 10,000 metric tons.

Worley previously supported concept development for the plant’s syngas purification stream, as well as reactor scale-up assessment and industrial planning.
