Lawn story short: Cincinnati artist creates sculptures from grass clippings
In Ohio, an artist and assistant professor at University of Cincinnati is turning grass clippings into a renewable source of bioplastic for sculptures and other artworks. Mrin Aggarwal, known professionally as Supermrin, developed the material by extracting cellulose fibers from discarded grass through a process of boiling, blending and washing. The resulting cellulose is converted into a biodegradable bioplastic that can be woven and shaped into durable structures once dry.
Aggarwal’s work also incorporates community participation. During a six-month residency with Cincinnati arts center Wave Pool, Aggarwal led workshops teaching residents about material science and bioplastics. Aggarwal’s latest work will be featured in Autoimmune Surrender, an exhibition opening in January 2027 at the Weston Art Gallery in Cincinnati. The exhibition will include sculptures and drawings alongside material research and community projects developed over the past two years.
