Corpus Christi signs up for nuclear option

August 19, 2026 |

In Texas, the U.S. Maritime Administration and Port of Corpus Christi signed an agreement on August 19 to advance maritime energy systems, including the exploration of small modular reactors, or SMRs, resilient port microgrids, shoreside power and infrastructure supporting emerging vessel propulsion concepts.

The memorandum also covers workforce development and follows the Transportation Department’s May launch of an initiative to develop small modular nuclear reactors for maritime applications.

“SMR integration has the potential to drive down costs and guarantee that our critical Gulf Coast maritime supply chains remain resilient against any contingency, from extreme weather to power grid disruptions,” Maritime Administrator Stephen Carmel said.

Corpus Christi is the second port to sign an agreement under the initiative. In June, the Transportation Department and Port of Long Beach agreed to establish a testing area for nuclear powered vessels.
