Samsung and KAIST open ship research center

In South Korea, Samsung Heavy Industries and KAIST opened the Advanced Maritime Research Center in Daejeon on August 13 to develop autonomous ship systems, low and zero carbon propulsion, smart shipyard technology and maritime robotics.

The center builds on a partnership dating to 1995 and will focus on AI navigation, ammonia and hydrogen fuel systems, digital twins for shipbuilding and robots for welding, painting and inspection.

Samsung Heavy Industries CEO Choi Sung an said the companies will “accelerate efforts to secure technological competitiveness and cultivate talent in autonomous navigation, environmentally friendly ships and smart manufacturing.” The partners have completed more than 1,000 joint research and technical advisory projects during their 32 year collaboration.
