New York artist creates sustainable paint recipe repository

August 17, 2026 |

In New York, artist and “creative technologist” Sophia Collender has created an open-source archive of biobased paint “recipes” suitable for artistic painting. Dubbed The Experimental Paint Archive, the publicly accessible collection lists only biodegradable, non-toxic, or reusable pigments that can be combined with binders and liquid vehicles to produce artistic paints. Collender, a graduate student in NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ Interactive Telecommunications Program,  drew from historical paints as well as materials developed in the ITP’s biomaterials lab. The project explores how artists can replace conventional, often petroleum-derived or toxic paint ingredients with more sustainable alternatives.
