A better bond: BindEthics scaling formaldehyde-free resin alternative
In the United Kingdom, biobased adhesives maker BindEthics has begun scaling production of its first product, Ecohesive. BindEthics developed Ecohesive to replace formaldehyde-based resins in construction and furniture. Formaldehyde-based resins are widely used but release formaldehyde gas over time, contributing to indoor air pollution and posing health risks.
The company is advancing batches from 40 to 2,0000 liters.
According to Packaging Europe, BindEthics is also developing and testing Ecohesive for freight and logistics applications designed to withstand demanding transport conditions. To support commercialization, the company has received scale-up, laboratory and commercial assistance from the Biorenewables Development Centre in York through its European Regional Development Programme. It is also collaborating with Bangor University in Wales, whose advanced testing capabilities are helping accelerate product development and validation.
