Embrapa expands low-carbon portfolio and launches corn and sorghum programs

June 19, 2026 |

In Brazil, Embrapa said that the launch of the Low Carbon Corn (LCC) and Low Carbon Sorghum (LCSg) programs by the company represents a milestone to strengthen sustainable agricultural production in Brazil.

The company noted that the initiatives offer concrete alternatives to the impacts of climate change and expand opportunities to have Brazilian corn and sorghum compete in markets that are increasingly demanding in terms of sustainability.

The purpose is to develop and validate certification protocols for the Low Carbon Corn and Low Carbon Sorghum concept brands, based on scientific evidence and in line with international standards. The projects comprise parameters that differentiate and can add value to corn and sorghum that are produced using sustainable practices and technologies, said Embrapa.

The actions will be divided into two phases. In phase 1, development and innovation, the goal is to develop Low Carbon Corn and Low Carbon Sorghum protocols, and register them at the competent authority, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply (Mapa).

In the second phase, the certification seal will be implemented in the market through accredited certifiers, according to a commercial exploitation model to be defined by Embrapa.
