Algeciras moves to extend green shipping corridor to Colombia

June 17, 2026 |

In Spain, El Estretcho Digital reports the Port of Algeciras is moving to extend its European Commission-backed green shipping corridor with Panama into Colombia, linking three countries around alternative fuels, port electrification and lower-emission shipping.

Port, shipping and government representatives from Spain, Panama and Colombia met in Algeciras to align the existing Algeciras-Panama and Colombia-Panama corridor plans. The proposed connection would combine Algeciras’ port infrastructure, the Panama Canal and Colombia’s emerging production of green hydrogen, ammonia and methanol.

Discussions covered alternative-fuel production and storage planned through the Green Energy Hub Algeciras Bay, along with shore power and terminal electrification projects.

The workshop also reviewed Panama Canal plans to reserve passage slots for dual-fuel vessels. The roadmap will set technical commitments, timelines and responsibilities for the three-country initiative.
