Hong Kong cuts port costs to fuel greener shipping
In Hong Kong, OpenGov Asia reports the government will reimburse up to half of the port dues paid by ships bunkering, carrying or operating on specified lower-carbon maritime fuels under two incentive schemes launching June 16.
Ocean-going vessels using LNG, methanol, ammonia, hydrogen or biodiesel blends containing at least 20% biofuel can receive refunds covering 25% or 50% of eligible port charges. The three-year scheme covers port facilities, anchorage, buoy and clearance fees.
A second programme will pay ships primarily powered by LNG, methanol, ammonia or hydrogen HK$60,000 annually for up to three years if they register in Hong Kong, with a maximum subsidy of HK$180,000 per vessel.
The government allocated about HK$34 million in its 2026 Budget to reduce the cost of adopting cleaner marine fuels and expand green bunkering in Hong Kong.
