Nestlé files to protect donkey milk protein ass-et
In Switzerland, Nestlé has filed a patent application for a beta-lactoglobulin protein derived from precision-fermented donkey milk. The BLG would be marketed for infants and adults with allergies to cow’s milk.
“Individuals with cow’s milk protein allergy must avoid all cow milk-based products, which can limit their dietary options and nutritional intake,” reads Nestlé’s patent application, according to Green Queen. “The presence of BLG in infant formula can lead to severe allergic reactions in infants with milk protein allergies, and it appears desirable to reduce or eliminate BLG in infant formula for this target population of infants.”
Donkey milk itself contains little BLG, leading Nestlé to see an alternative route with precision fermentation. The company has also collaborated with Perfect Day and Cowabunga to develop animal-free milks.
