In Sweden, AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals has partnered with Renmatix to develop renewable additives for paints and construction materials.

Renmatix was a 2017 winner of AkzoNobel’s 2017 Imagine Chemistry challenge, which AkzoNobel uses to identify appropriate partners for its green chemistry goals.

Renmatix’s Plantrose process uses supercritical water to convert woody biomass into cellulosic sugars and other biomass fractions.

“We will work jointly with Renmatix to develop a range of novel cellulose-based materials for commercial use, ranging from improving personal care to cleaning and construction materials,” said Annika Karlsson, AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals RD&I Director. “This collaboration is another testament to the success of the Imagine Chemistry challenge and shows that startups, scale-ups and corporates can work together efficiently to break barriers in innovation.”
