In Arizona, Advanced Genomic Solutions has created a potentially lifesaving genetic test for veterans being served at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Veterans who are prescribed medications for post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, or other health issues can sometimes have to deal with serious side effects, even worsening of their symptoms which could contribute to the 20 veterans that commit suicide every day. Now when a doctor determines a veteran needs prescription medication for mental health issues, they can do a cheek swab to get genetic data back highlighting which medications may not be appropriate for their patient. This will allow doctors to more easily and quickly identify the best medications for each veteran based on their genetic makeup.
