In Argentina, the world’s largest battery electric ship, China Zorrilla, has entered commercial service between Buenos Aires and Colonia, Uruguay, following an Oct. 21 launch ceremony, Tasmanian shipbuilder Incat announced.

Built for ferry operator Buquebus, the 130 meter vessel carries up to 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles across the River Plate. Its energy storage system exceeds 40 MWh, with more than 250 tonnes of batteries powering eight electric waterjets.

“What really stands out is the passenger experience,” said Incat Managing Director Craig Clifford, who joined the maiden commercial voyage. He said passengers aboard China Zorrilla would notice the absence of conventional engine noise and vibration.
