WinGD lands first orders for ethanol-fueled ship engines
In Switzerland, marine engine maker WinGD said it has taken the first commercial orders for ethanol-powered engines destined for ocean-going ships, with two large ore carriers to be built in China for Shandong Shipping Corporation under long-term charter to Brazil-based mining giant Vale.
The vessels, each capable of carrying 325,000 tons of cargo, will run primarily on ethanol. WinGD said the engines are adapted from its existing methanol-fuelled platform, with the two fuels sharing similar combustion characteristics. Vale said ethanol can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 90 percent compared with heavy fuel oil depending on lifecycle assumptions. The ships will carry iron ore from Brazil to China. Engine deliveries are scheduled for early 2029.
