WinGD completes first class approval tests for ammonia engine
In Switzerland, WinGD said on February 25 it has completed both Type Approval Testing and Factory Acceptance Testing for its ammonia fueled two-stroke marine engine, marking what the company calls a first for commercial shipping.
The tests were carried out in January at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Engine & Machinery facility in South Korea and witnessed by Lloyd’s Register along with representatives from major classification societies, under the supervision of gas carrier owner EXMAR.
The engine will be installed on a 46,000 cubic meter LPG and ammonia carrier ordered for EXMAR. The vessels in the series are expected to become the first ammonia-fueled gas carriers to enter commercial service.
WinGD said the testing concludes a multi year development program focused on safety, control, and system integration for ammonia as a marine fuel. The company has secured an orderbook of around 30 ammonia capable engines across gas carriers, bulk carriers, tankers, and container ships.
