Wasaline secures local biogas supply for Finland-Sweden ferry route
In Finland, ferry operator Wasaline signed a two year agreement with St1 Biokraft for approximately 143,000 MMBtu of liquefied biomethane annually, beginning in January 2028, to fuel its Aurora Botnia ferry operating between Vaasa, Finland and Umeå, Sweden, according to an announcement by St1 Biokraft.
The agreement aims to source most of the fuel from a new biomethane plant in Nurmo, Finland operated by Suomen Lantakaasu, a joint venture between St1 Biokraft and Valio. The project links local agricultural residues to marine fuel production.
“This is our first major marine biogas agreement and an important milestone for St1 Biokraft. Shipping is a sector where biogas can already contribute to significant emission reductions,” said Johan Zakrisson, head of business development.
The liquefied biomethane will be transported by tanker truck to Vaasa for bunkering. Aurora Botnia already uses renewable gas, batteries and shore power.
