USDA forecasts higher corn and soybean yields

October 16, 2026 |

In North Dakota, AgWeek reported that the recent monthly USDA Crop Report and USDA World Supply and Demand Estimates, included increases in the projected 2026 yield and production estimates for both corn and soybeans, compared to the estimates in the September reports.

The October Crop Report increased the projected 2026 average U.S. corn yield to 181.2 bushels per acre, which was an increase of 2.7 bushels per acre from the September USDA estimate, and was well above the average pre-report yield estimate of 177.7 bushels per acre by grain trade analysts.

USDA also increased the 2026 soybean yield projection to 53.2 bushels per acre from the estimate of 52.8 bushels per acre in September, according to the report.

Total U.S. corn production for 2026 is now estimated at just over 16 billion bushels, which is still nearly 1 billion bushels below the final 2025 corn production level of 16.96 billion bushels.
