US opposes IMO net-zero shipping framework at London talks
In the United Kingdom, Federal Maritime Commission Chairman Laura DiBella joined the US delegation to the International Maritime Organization’s 84th session of the Maritime Environmental Protection Committee in London this week, reinforcing American opposition to the IMO Net-Zero Framework.
DiBella argued that the framework amounts to an unnecessary tax on US shippers and vessels operating in international waters, with costs projected to run into the billions annually and passed directly to American consumers. The FMC monitors foreign regulations that could create unfavorable conditions for US shipping and holds authority to impose fines or bar foreign-flagged vessels from US ports if such conditions are found.
