Trump targets IMO net-zero plan in U.N. address
In the United States, gCaptain reports President Donald Trump used a wide-ranging September 22 address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York to renew U.S. opposition to the International Maritime Organization’s Net-Zero Framework, calling its emissions pricing mechanism a global carbon tax that would raise shipping costs.
Trump’s 37-minute speech ranged across Iran, Ukraine, artificial intelligence, drug cartels and U.N. reform, placing the shipping dispute within a broader argument against international rules he said infringe on national sovereignty.
The IMO framework would progressively tighten greenhouse gas intensity requirements for marine fuels and require higher-emitting ships to make compliance payments.
Trump said his administration helped stop adoption last year. Negotiations resume November 23 ahead of a December 4 session that could formally adopt the framework.
