The Digest’s 2026 Multi-Slide Guide to C&D Wood’s Clean Fraction
The US landfills tens of millions of tons of construction and demolition wood, yet gasification projects fail to utilize it as feedstock. The primary constraint is not reactor technology, but stringent purity specifications set by end outlets. Demolition wood is heavily contaminated with metals, concrete, and copper chromium arsenate wood preservatives. Purity requirements shrink usable fractions and widen catchment radii, driving up sorting and haulage bills. Without subsidized outlets or automated sorting at scale, contaminated wood remains essentially valueless today.
