Taiwan’s China Airlines cuts emissions with sustainable fuel
In Taiwan, Taiwan News reported that China Airlines said that it used a 40% blend of sustainable aviation fuel on a long-haul flight to Amsterdam for the first time, cutting an estimated 93.2 ton of carbon dioxide emissions.
The flight from Taoyuan to Amsterdam marked China Airlines’ fifth participation in SkyTeam’s Aviation Challenge and its first use of a 40% SAF blend on a long-haul route, according to the report.
China Airlines President Chen Han-ming said the airline had used SAF eight times since 2022, the report added.
Chen said SAF had historically cost about 2.5 to three times as much as conventional jet fuel, although the difference varied with oil prices. He said China Airlines hoped to reach a more advanced level of sustainability before considering whether the higher cost of SAF could be passed on to passengers.
