In Korea, Gangwon Newspaper reports Taebaek City is seeking a clean methanol partnership with Latvia to turn forest biomass into marine fuel and build a route into the European market. Taebaek Mayor Lee Sang-ho met Latvian Embassy officials in Seoul on August 7 to propose a Korea Latvia Clean Methanol Global Partnership as shipping faces tighter IMO and EU carbon rules.
Taebaek plans to build a first domestic demonstration and production unit using forest biomass, then use the project to develop technology and operating experience for larger production. The city is also considering the closed Jangseong coal mine site for future expansion.
Latvia’s forest resources could support a second stage focused on production, overseas supply and marine fuel use in Europe. Taebaek sees the project as both a shipping fuel venture and a way to replace part of the economy once built around coal mining.
