SSE pauses standalone hydrogen production projects amid UK policy delays

June 4, 2026 |

In the UK, Gas World reported that UK energy firm SSE has paused its standalone hydrogen production projects amid “material policy delays” and will instead focus on regional infrastructure development and potential clean hydrogen offtake.

In its full-year results, it reported a $31.4 billion operating profit, the company confirmed it logged a $29.2 million write-down on its own hydrogen production projects and joint venture investments in its thermal power generation subsidiary, SSE Thermal.

“During the course of 2025, SSE reviewed its hydrogen development strategy and, in response to material policy delays to the roll-out of low-carbon hydrogen, took the decision to pause its standalone hydrogen production projects,” it said.

The review came after SSE cancelled two projects in 2024, including its 1,600 tons per year project at its Gordonbush Wind Farm in the Scottish Highlands, which failed to secure subsidies in the UK’s first hydrogen funding round.
