In Bulgaria, Renewables Now reported that Sparc Hydrogen, a developer of patented photocatalytic water splitting (PWS) reactor technology for hydrogen production, has signed an agreement with US-based SunHydrogen to integrate and test the latter’s technology in Sparc’s concentrated-solar reactors.
Under the technology collaboration and intellectual property protection agreement, the companies will test the integration of SunHydrogen’s photoelectrochemical (PEC) and integrated PV-electrolysis (IPV-E) modules with Sparc Hydrogen’s reactors operating under concentrated sunlight. Subject to successful completion of laboratory milestones, the technology will then be tested at Sparc Hydrogen’s SHARP pilot facility in Roseworthy, South Australia, according to the report.
The report also noted that preliminary tests of SunHydrogen modules at Sparc Hydrogen’s laboratories have shown solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiencies of more than 10%, while also demonstrating that SunHydrogen’s modules can operate under higher solar fluxes at moderate solar concentrations.
The agreement has a 24-month term and gives Sparc Hydrogen exclusive rights for applying SunHydrogen’s technology in concentrated-light applications above an agreed solar concentration threshold. Subject to successful completion of the collaboration, Sparc Hydrogen also has an option to negotiate a long-term commercial supply agreement or manufacturing licence for SunHydrogen’s modules.
