South Korea opens hybrid ship propulsion test center
In South Korea, Electric Times reported a land-based test center for hybrid propulsion systems for medium and large ships opened Sept. 30 in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province, allowing complete power systems to be tested before installation aboard vessels.
The 34.3 billion won facility includes 6.9 MW and 2.3 MW test rigs for shaft generator motor systems, along with equipment to evaluate integrated propulsion systems for vessels ranging from large ships to midsize government craft.
Hybrid systems connect a shaft generator motor between the engine and propeller, using surplus engine power to generate electricity or electric power to assist propulsion, helping reduce fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions.
The Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute will begin equipment commissioning and company support in October, including performance testing, certification and development of a KOLAS-accredited testing system.
