South Korea opens 500 GWh clean-hydrogen power auction

November 5, 2026 |

In South Korea, GasWorld reports the country has opened bidding for an auction covering up to 500 GWh of electricity generated from clean hydrogen. Eligible projects must use hydrogen with lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions of no more than 4 kg of CO₂ equivalent per kilogram of hydrogen. The program considers fuel-cell plants, qualifying hydrogen-powered combined-cycle gas turbines and hydrogen internal-combustion generators. Successful bidders are expected to be selected by June 2027, based equally on price and non-price criteria, including grid impact and economic and industrial contributions. Projects must begin power generation by 2030. The auction forms part of South Korea’s wider effort to expand low-carbon electricity and phase out coal-fired generation by 2040.
