South Korea completes first commercial ammonia bunkering of ammonia-powered vessel

April 30, 2026 |

In South Korea, Ulsan Port has completed the world’s first commercial ammonia bunkering of an ammonia-fueled vessel, marking what port authorities call the opening of a new era in green shipping.

The operation, conducted on April 23 at Ulsan’s No. 2 pier, saw Lotte Fine Chemical supply 600 tonnes of green ammonia via pipe-to-ship connection to ANTWERPEN, a 45-kilotonne ammonia carrier built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and the world’s first commercially operated ammonia-fueled ship.

The bunkering capped more than a year of safety preparation, with Ulsan port authority working alongside regulators, experts and Lotte Fine Chemical to clear a hazardous materials management plan for ammonia specifically, a fuel that demands significantly more handling care than conventional marine fuels.
